Martial Arts in Bournemouth & Dorset – Why Train at Wass’Muffin Martial Arts Academy?

If you’re looking for martial arts in Bournemouth, Boscombe, Poole, Christchurch or anywhere across Dorset, choosing the right gym is about much more than simply finding somewhere to work out.

The coaches matter. The atmosphere matters. The timetable matters. The quality of the training matters. And most importantly, you need somewhere you’ll actually enjoy coming back to.

At Wass’Muffin Martial Arts Academy in Boscombe, Bournemouth, we offer Muay Thai, boxing, kickboxing/K1, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Strength & Conditioning, kids and junior martial arts, sparring, fundamentals sessions and open gym training.

Whether you’ve never thrown a punch in your life, want a more enjoyable way to get fit, want your child to develop confidence and discipline, or you’re an experienced martial artist looking to compete, there is a place for you here.

But Wass’Muffin didn’t begin when we opened the doors to our gym. Our story goes back much further than that.

Wass’Muffin Was a Team Before It Was a Gym

Wass’Muffin Martial Arts Academy opened its own permanent gym in Bournemouth in 2017, but the Wass’Muffin name and fight team existed long before we had a building of our own.

Founder and Head Coach Michael “Wassouri” Namrit was already teaching Muay Thai and developing fighters around Bournemouth for years before opening the academy. During this period, he coached students and fighters from different local gym premises, with fighters already competing under the Wass’Muffin name.

So Wass’Muffin was a team before it was a gym.

Over the years, students became fighters, fighters became coaches, friendships developed and a community grew around the training.

In August 2017, Wass’Muffin finally got a permanent home of its own in Bournemouth.

Today, the academy is based in Boscombe and welcomes people from Bournemouth, Southbourne, Christchurch, Poole and across Dorset.

Meet the Wass’Muffin Coaching Team

A big part of Wass’Muffin is the history between the people teaching here.

This isn’t simply a collection of instructors put together to fill a timetable. Many of our coaches have trained, competed and developed alongside each other for years.

Some started as Michael’s students. Some trained alongside him before Wass’Muffin had its own gym. Some competed representing Wass’Muffin and eventually became coaches themselves.

Michael “Wassouri” Namrit – Founder & Head Coach

Originally from Martinique in the Caribbean, Michael “Wassouri” Namrit began martial arts at just 13 years old.

His journey started with Damnié, a traditional Martinican martial art, before progressing into Capoeira and eventually Muay Thai.

Michael spent years developing his knowledge of Muay Thai, including a period training under Master Sert in Bournemouth. Although Michael competed himself, building a large fight record was never the focus of his martial arts journey. Life, work and raising a family meant competition often had to take a back seat, but martial arts never did.

His real passion increasingly became teaching and developing other people.

Long before Wass’Muffin had its own premises, Michael was already coaching students and preparing fighters for competition around Bournemouth, with fighters representing the Wass’Muffin name before the academy had a permanent home.

Over the years, he has coached complete beginners, competitive fighters and students who have eventually developed into coaches themselves.

Today, Michael remains Head Coach at Wass’Muffin, teaching everyone from people attending their first-ever Muay Thai class to fighters preparing for competition.

Charlotte “Lottie” Lowe – Co-Founder & Coach

Charlotte “Lottie” Lowe, also known as Charlie, has been part of the Wass’Muffin story from the very beginning.

Lottie was Michael’s first fighter representing Wass’Muffin. Michael trained her, prepared her for competition and travelled with her to fights long before Wass’Muffin had its own permanent academy.

Her martial arts journey later took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with cancer.

Lottie stepped away from fighting while undergoing years of treatment and chemotherapy and created her own FUC – “Fuck U Cancer” brand from her experience.

After her cancer was successfully treated, Lottie eventually returned to training and even competed again.

Today, she has stepped away from competing and concentrates on coaching and inspiring other people.

Her journey from fighter, through cancer treatment, back to martial arts and eventually into coaching represents much of what Wass’Muffin stands for: resilience, community and continuing to move forward when life doesn’t go according to plan.

Sam Jones – Boxing Coach

Sam Jones brings genuine professional boxing experience to the Wass’Muffin coaching team, and his friendship and training history with Michael goes back many years.

When they were younger, Sam and Michael trained together within the Bournemouth martial arts scene. Sam initially trained and competed in Thai boxing before eventually concentrating on boxing and going on to compete professionally.

After his competitive years, Sam travelled extensively and developed a deeper interest in physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing, including breathwork, meditation and movement.

Today, he brings his years of fighting and training experience to Wass’Muffin as our boxing coach, helping members develop their technique, movement, fitness, confidence and understanding of boxing.

Kamil Mrozinski – Kickboxing Coach

Kamil Mrozinski brings a strong traditional and full-contact martial arts background to Wass’Muffin.

His background is primarily in karate, where he has achieved a high competitive level, including European and national success.

Kamil later became one of Michael’s students in K1 and Muay Thai and competed representing Wass’Muffin.

Today, Kamil brings that experience back to the academy as a kickboxing coach, helping members develop their striking, movement, technique and confidence.

Although karate forms an important part of Kamil’s personal martial arts background, his role at Wass’Muffin is focused on kickboxing.

His journey is another example of a student developing through the academy, competing and eventually passing that knowledge on to other members.

Alex Fudio – Strength & Conditioning and Muay Thai Coach

Originally from Italy, Alex Fudio is a longtime friend of Michael and another member of the team whose connection goes back to the days before Wass’Muffin had its own premises.

Alex has remained part of the Wass’Muffin journey since its early days, bringing years of martial arts and physical training experience to the academy.

His particular strength is physical preparation and conditioning.

Today, Alex coaches Strength & Conditioning alongside Muay Thai, helping members improve their fitness, strength, stamina and overall physical performance.

Not everybody who walks through our doors wants to become a fighter, and Alex’s sessions are a great example of how martial arts training and conditioning can also be used simply to become stronger, fitter and healthier.

Zoe Wint – Active Fighter & Developing Coach

Zoe’s connection with Michael goes back to when she was only 16, years before she ever became a Muay Thai fighter.

She later started training Muay Thai at Wass’Muffin and gradually progressed from learning the fundamentals to becoming an active fighter representing the academy.

Zoe is still at the beginning of her competitive career and continues to train, compete and gain experience in the ring.

Michael is also mentoring Zoe towards becoming a coach.

She now teaches and assists with Muay Thai Fundamentals sessions, working particularly with beginners who are learning Muay Thai for the first time.

Her progression from beginner to fighter and now towards coaching is exactly the type of development we want to encourage at Wass’Muffin.

Martial Arts Classes for Beginners in Bournemouth

One of the biggest misconceptions about martial arts is that you need to be fit, flexible or already know how to fight before you walk into a martial arts gym.

You don’t.

A large number of people who join Wass’Muffin have never trained in martial arts before.

That is why we have Fundamentals sessions specifically designed for beginners to learn the basics properly.

You can develop your stance, movement, punches, kicks, defence and fitness at your own pace before progressing further.

There is no expectation that you should already know what you’re doing.

That’s what the coaches are here for.

Muay Thai, Boxing, Kickboxing, BJJ and Fitness Under One Roof

One of the biggest advantages of joining Wass’Muffin is the amount and variety of training available from one academy.

Our weekly timetable includes Muay Thai Fundamentals, Advanced Muay Thai, boxing, kickboxing/K1, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), sparring, Strength & Conditioning, kids and junior sessions and open gym periods.

That means you don’t necessarily have to choose between getting fit and learning martial arts.

You can do both.

Some members concentrate mainly on Muay Thai. Others prefer boxing. Some combine striking with BJJ. Others come primarily for fitness and conditioning.

And for people who want to compete, there is a pathway towards more advanced training and representing Wass’Muffin in competition.

With classes running throughout the week, members have plenty of opportunities to fit training around work, family and everyday life.

Kids & Junior Martial Arts in Bournemouth

Martial arts isn’t only for adults.

Our kids and junior sessions give younger members an opportunity to improve their fitness, coordination, discipline and confidence while learning martial arts in a structured and friendly environment.

The emphasis isn’t on turning every child into a fighter.

It’s about learning, developing confidence, staying active, having fun and becoming comfortable challenging themselves.

For parents looking for kids martial arts in Bournemouth, Boscombe, Southbourne, Christchurch, Poole or the surrounding Dorset area, Wass’Muffin provides a welcoming environment where young people can develop at their own pace.

Martial Arts Without the Ego

Walking into a martial arts gym for the first time can be intimidating.

We understand that.

Wass’Muffin has competitive fighters and experienced martial artists training alongside complete beginners, but we don’t believe experience gives anyone the right to make somebody else feel uncomfortable.

Experienced members help newer members. Beginners are encouraged to ask questions.

We train hard, but we also laugh, play music and enjoy ourselves.

We want people to look forward to training.

For many of our members, Wass’Muffin becomes much more than somewhere they come for an hour of exercise. It becomes part of their routine, their social circle and their community.

Great Value Martial Arts Training in Bournemouth

We have always tried to make quality martial arts training accessible and affordable.

With different classes available throughout the week and multiple disciplines under one roof, a Wass’Muffin membership gives you the opportunity to train regularly without needing memberships at several different gyms.

There are options for people who want to train occasionally as well as members who want to make martial arts a major part of their weekly routine.

We believe in offering genuine value for money, with access to experienced coaches, a wide range of martial arts and fitness classes and plenty of opportunities to train.

And if you’re not sure whether Wass’Muffin is right for you, you don’t need to make a big commitment immediately.

You Don’t Have to Want to Fight

Some people join Wass’Muffin because they want to compete.

Many don’t.

You might want to lose weight. You might want to become fitter. You might want more confidence. You might be looking for something more interesting than a conventional gym. You might want your child to learn discipline and become more active.

Or you might simply have watched Muay Thai, boxing or martial arts for years and finally decided you want to give it a go yourself.

All of those are valid reasons to start.

You don’t need to become a fighter to belong in a martial arts gym.

But if you eventually decide that you want to test yourself in competition, the pathway, coaching and experience are here to help you do it properly.
